Three fantastic new books by Scottish authors available now from Melrose Books in Ely, UK!

1. The Girl in The Picture by Alasdair Black

The Girl in the Picture is based in Africa at the time of decolonisation, and is the fictitious story of two sisters, Amanda and Fabayo Lucawanea. The story opens with the two girls and their parents trying to flee from their home, the former colonial country of Arigine, and seeking refuge in the neighbouring country of Galense. However, whilst trying to cross the border the two young girls suffer the misfortune of seeing their parents fall victim to a traffic accident, and are henceforth left to finish their perilous journey alone. Although the experiences that the girls endure are traumatic, they are comforted both by each other, and the fact that their parents may not have been killed outright in the accident and therefore may be reunited with their daughters at some point in the future.

2. Mind Bomb by Luke Mitchell

Southeast Cambodia, 14 February 2005.

The moon was rising as Hamish strolled along the beach, inhaling the balmy sea air. He came upon a solitary coconut palm and decided to sit underneath it.    Click! The sound heralded the arrival of a ten-second eternity. Red light flashed in his brain. Eardrums buzzing, a torrent of adrenaline screamed through his bloodstream. Hamish experienced the sensations of a freefall paratrooper, tearing through the clouds as he rushed down to meet his destiny …

Angus and Hamish were twins, but far from identical. Separated at birth, they grew up knowing nothing of each other’s existence; but their lives were destined to intertwine.

Fifty years on, and thousands of miles from the land of his birth, Hamish finds himself on a beach in Cambodia – sitting on a live landmine. He has a choice – move, and die – or sit still and let his life pass before his eyes …

The night Angus and Hamish were born, a violent gale raged across the west coast of Scotland. The storm killed their father, and their birth killed their mother. Storm and tragedy were destined to mark both their lives, in very different ways.

Angus was a wayward boy, careering into a life of crime, drug dealing and violent entanglements with the Glasgow underworld, before finding spiritual salvation on the 1960s hippy trail to India.

Hamish from his earliest memories, lived a life of middle-class normality. But beneath the surface of his happy domestic life, a dark secret lurked - like a bomb waiting to detonate in his mind.

Mind Bomb is a compelling, wildly comic, subversive and highly imaginative novel that narrates the misadventures of Angus and Hamish Macleod, twin brothers separated at birth in 1951 on Scotland’s holy Isle of Iona. Lola, the fickle Goddess of Chance, contrives to reunite the twins. She succeeds in her endeavour. What ensues is a sex, drug, rock and rolling helter-skelter ride that transports the reader into dimensions beyond the known.

3. Scotland's Salmon King by Colin Leslie

Scotland’s Salmon King is the autobiography of a man who started fishing at the age of five and hasn’t stopped since, although now well into his eighties. Leslie spent over 50 years as a ‘ghillie’ on the River Tay in Perthshire, when he was lucky enough to have a job which he enjoyed as a hobby, and which has been very eventful, both in terms of the fish he has caught and the people he has met whilst catching them.

In this amusing and poignant account the author talks about the many interesting characters he has had the pleasure (or otherwise) of meeting, and also describes the way fishing, and other countryside pursuits, have changed over the years.
