1.1. BACKGROUND

SCOTS IN LONDON, began in October 2001, as Scots In London, when Founder and Promoter, Eddie Tait, was recruited by his school Former Pupils club in London to recruit new and younger members.

SCOTS IN LONDON, began with informal drinks between 16 Former Pupils of two Edinburgh Schools clubs in London (The Royal High School and Stewarts Melville).

SCOTS IN LONDON became a regular quarterly drinks meet-up and grew quarter-on-quarter to encompass other Scottish Schools, followed by the inclusion of Scottish Universities, Charities, Clubs and Societies,  and Scottish Individuals.

SCOTS IN LONDON quickly identified that other Scottish clubs and societies were having similar issues.

SCOTS IN LONDON acknowledged that Scots had integrated so well into London life that there was no central Scottish community, unlike many other nationalities - Irish, Poles, Africans etc.

SCOTS IN LONDON decided that it was best to recruit new members by bringing people together in relaxed, collaborative, unantimidating arenas and meet up over a few drinks.

SCOTS IN LONDON has quickly established itself at the centre hub of the Scottish community diaspora in London.

SCOTS IN LONDON play a key role in connecting and promoting 400,000 first and second generation Scots in London, equivalent in size to Scotland's third largest city - a major global Scottish network and city of influence.

400,000 Scots in London: Scotland's Third Largest City

"For hundreds of years, Scots have been lured by the bright lights of London. A fledging organisation, Scots In London, has now planted a Saltire firmly in the heart of England’s capital. Founder, Edinburgh-born, Eddie Tait explains the work of SIL.” Daily Record, St Andrew’s Day Edition, November 30th 2006.

1.2. CREATING A CENTRAL FOCUS FOR SCOTS

SCOTS IN LONDON was created "for Scots, by Scots".

SCOTS IN LONDON evolved between 2003 and 2006 into an organisation focussed on helping various Scottish organisations get their news out to the community.

SCOTS IN LONDON promote and raise awareness of key Scottish activities and events via improved communication through widely distributed email newsletters.

SCOTS IN LONDON has grown from strength to strength.

SCOTS IN LONDON now acts as a centrepiece or hub and fills the gaps for Scottish individuals and organisations by creating a central Scottish portal or umbrella.

SCOTS IN LONDON complements existing niche Scottish individuals, businesses, clubs and societies, and charities etc, by bringing together their messages under one social, business and cultural umbrella to create the ultimate Scottish network.

SCOTS IN LONDON has grown very fast since 2005 - 5,000+ mailing list members joined 2005-7 of all ages and backgrounds, with many influential Scots, from a base of around 400 at the end of 2004.

SCOTS IN LONDON was approached by Scotch Whisky giants Whyte and Mackay to become lead sponsor. We were delighted to accept their very kind offer. A big thank you to Whyte and Mackay, their then Chief Executive Bob Brannan (Pre-takeover), and the Marketing Team for their superb support, which was a major catalyst and defining moment in the decision to move Scots In London from an informal social basis to a more solid footing in 2006.

SCOTS IN LONDON developed its first website (www.scotsinlondon.co.uk) in 2006 with invaluable assistance from Typhina Web Design - thanks Will.

SCOTS IN LONDON was formally registered in Scotland as Scots In London Ltd on 16th March 2006 (SC299011).
