GLASGOW: Go Ahead for Arena and Velodrome

Glasgow City Council’s Executive Committee has approved £4 million funding to allow all of the pre-construction phase of the National Indoor Sports Arena, the National Velodrome and the sportscotland HQ in the city’s East End to take place.

The decision allows the design team behind the project to continue from the feasibility stage through to the conclusion of RIBA Stage F Detailed Design Production Information.

Work on ground preparation will start in 2007, with building work due to begin in 2008 and completion due in 2010.

The National Indoor Sports Arena (NISA) will have 5000 seats in a national multi-sports venue that can act as a dedicated sports venue able to host national and international sports events. The seating is totally flexible and can be tailored to the type of event taking place in the arena. NISA will also act as an elite sports training centre as well as providing a state of the art sports facility for the community.

The National Velodrome will have 2000 seats, and it is anticipated that this will become a world centre for cycling and a ‘wheels’ facility for the local community, as it will also feature an inline skating facility. The amount of seats in this arena can be expanded to 4000 as necessary if Scotland wins the bid for the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

The sportscotland HQ will be located in the hub of the entire complex, between the NISA and the National Velodrome.
