GLASGOW: Oceania delegates see Glasgow's Bid
|
|
Delegates from the Oceania Region have spent their first full day in Glasgow seeing Scotland's Bid to host the Commonwealth Games in 2014. The group, representing the Commonwealth Games Associations of Australia, the Cook Islands, Fiji, Norfolk Island, Tuvalu, the Republic of Nauru, Niue and Papua New Guinea spent Thursday seeing some of the fantastic venues and facilities on offer in the city. The delegates also saw the site of the planned Athletes Village and took in Celtic Park, where the opening ceremony for the Games in 2014 would be held. Delegates also heard presentations from Sir Willie Rae, Chief Constable of Strathclyde Police, on safety and security and from Bid Director Derek Casey on the medical facilities and transport innovations around the Games. In the afternoon First Minister Alex Salmond and Deputy First Minister Nicola Sturgeon joined the Oceania group for a reception at the Palace of Art. On Friday and Saturday the delegates will continue their tour of Glasgow, as well as hearing more about the Bid, and enjoying some famous Scottish hospitality before leaving the city on Sunday.
