Local Authority Housing Print E-mail

In Scotland, each local authority either has its own housing or has access to rented housing owned by housing associations. This is commonly known as council or local authority housing. In this section we refer to it as council housing.

Around a quarter of people in Scotland live in council houses.

Most people moving to Scotland from overseas, particularly from non EEA countries, are unlikely to be entitled to this type of housing.

Once you know where you are going to be living in Scotland, you should contact your local authority to find out whether or not you are entitled to council housing:

Find your local authority by visiting the COSLA website.

Each local authority keeps a register of people wanting council housing.

The number of people housed varies in each local authority and different local authorities may well give different priorities to people applying in their area.

Anyone who wishes to become a council house tenant must first fill in an application form.

The form can be obtained by writing to, telephoning or visiting the Local Authority/Council Housing office.
