Moving Your Possessions

People move to Scotland for all sorts of reasons – to work, to study, to set up a business – and because they want to enjoy a quality of life for themselves and their families, that few other countries can offer.

If you're thinking about moving to Scotland, you need to move all your possessions and may want to know some facts and figures first.

The list of removal companies will provide detailed lists of what you can and cannot bring with you and the average time it takes to ship your possessions.

Cost of Moving

It can be costly and challening moving to a new country.

Relocation and removal companies can help with your move. You will have to pay money for the services of both types of companies.

You choose which company will help move your possessions depending on your circumstance and budget.

Removal Companies

Relocation companies arranges everything for you, from departure to destination. They may help you to arrange local housing, schooling, medical and banking facilities, transportation and much more.

It should only take a few days to have your belongings shipped from continental Europe, around four weeks from the east coast of the US, six weeks from the west coast. From Far Eastern countries it should take around six weeks, eight weeks or so from Australia.

Removal companies will pack your possessions and transport them safely to your new location and home.

When choosing a removal company, it is wise to ensure that they are members of the International Federation of Furniture Removers (FIDI), the Overseas Moving Network International (OMNI) or of the British Association of Removers (BAR).

You should then be covered by insurance and guarantees of safe delivery.

> Federation of International Furniture Removers (FIDI)
> Overseas Moving Network International (OMNI)
> British Association of Removers (BAR)

Both types of companies will need specific information about your possessions and the amount of possessions so they can give you a realistic price.

All the information you need will be found in the links provided on this page.

Storage

If you do not have a new location or home to go to straight away but you have possessions you need to store, there are companies that specialise in storing personal possessions.

These companies also charge for the service but you will have a secure place to store your possessions.

Insurance
Moving all your valuable possessions to another country takes a lot of organising. One item not to forget while organising the move is your insurance.

Arrange home removals and storage insurance so your possessions are covered during your big move.

Bringing your pets

While making the move to Scotland, as well as your family and personal possessions you may also have a family pet that has to be moved too.

There are rules to follow before you can bring your pet into the UK.

For information on quarantine rules/kennels, animal passports and animals you can bring into the UK, go to the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) website.
