Each year, the government collects tax (money from your earnings) to pay for the public services it provides.

It works out how much it will cost to provide these services and how much tax it needs to collect to pay for them.

Every March, the Chancellor of the Exchequor sets this out in the Budget. The Budget is a summary of the amount of money the government plans to spend in the year along with a plan of how it is going to meet this spending.
Find out more about tax via the HM Treasury website.
